Choose one observation point
Name a specific spot before recording the time: “beside the left door” is more repeatable than “patio.” Use the same point for each observation and note the date. Write down anything that makes the day unusual, such as cloud cover or a temporary obstruction. The log is an observation record, not a light meter.
A photo can help you remember the location, but you do not need to upload one here. This site does not request your address or use a mapping service. Keep private location details out of any worksheet you intend to share publicly.
Record intervals, not guesses between visits
The tool accepts intervals when you observed direct sun reaching that point. For example, 09:00–11:30 and 13:00–14:15 total 3 hours 45 minutes. If two entries overlap, it merges them rather than counting the same minutes twice. These are fictional times to demonstrate the log, not a forecast for any location.
If you checked only at noon, do not label the whole morning sunny. Record the limits of your observation. An unchecked period is unknown, not proof of shade. Similarly, the explicit “no direct sun observed” option records your statement about that observation day, not a permanent property of the spot.
Use the result as one piece of evidence
Save or print the log with the date, spot name and notes. Repeat the exercise on other relevant dates instead of treating one observation as a year-round total. The tool does not predict tomorrow’s light, measure intensity or assign a guaranteed crop list.
When selecting a plant, compare your records with guidance for the actual crop and cultivar, using your local extension service where possible. Keep direct-sun duration separate from temperature, water access and available container space. Buying a planter first cannot resolve missing information about the place it will stand.
