Give each possible pot a record
Make three rows on a sheet, or just one if that is your starting scale. For each row write the proposed location, a plant you actually want, the container already available and the information still missing. A blank cell is a question to resolve, not a reason to fill a shopping basket.
Number the rows A, B and C so you can connect them with sunlight logs and volume estimates later. There is no special horticultural advantage to three pots; this is simply a manageable example for organizing a small project.
Resolve the unknowns in order
First check whether the location is allowed and appropriate for containers. This site cannot assess balcony loading, rail attachments, building rules or emergency access. Obtain the relevant approval or qualified advice rather than interpreting a drawing or volume result as permission.
Next record observed light, the crop and cultivar information you are using, and how you will reach a water source. Check the container’s intended use and drainage arrangement. Only after those questions make sense should you estimate growing-media quantity. A perfectly calculated volume is not useful if the container is wrong for the plant or the setting.
Buy the missing function, not the whole category
List what you already own before choosing extras. A suitable existing measuring tool or hand tool may cover the task. Our gear notes present options and limitations, not a compulsory starter bundle. Keep the cost of plants and growing media visible rather than spending the entire budget on accessories.
After the first setup, save your worksheet and note any practical difficulty: reaching a refill point, reading a faded label or storing a partly used bag. That gives a concrete reason for a later change. Expanding because the first record was useful is different from buying several copies of an untested plan.
