Identify what you are buying
An ornamental outer container may be intended to hold a separate growing pot. Do not assume every vessel pictured with a plant is ready for direct planting. University of Maryland Extension emphasizes drainage in ordinary growing containers and explains that adding gravel does not improve drainage. A layer of stones is not a substitute for an appropriate container arrangement.
That does not mean you should improvise holes in an unknown material. Check the intended use and instructions for the actual item. This guide is a buying checklist, not a drilling or construction tutorial.
Inspect the complete arrangement
Write down whether you are considering a growing pot alone, a pot inside an outer cover, or a designed reservoir system. Include any tray or saucer in the record. Photographing an empty arrangement for your own notes can reveal details that a listing’s front view does not show.
Consider where water will go and whether you can access the components for the checks required by the instructions. The site cannot approve drainage onto a shared walkway, neighboring property or a balcony below. Follow the rules for the location and avoid treating a product category as permission for a particular installation.
Turn uncertainty into a seller question
Ask a precise question such as “Is this intended for direct planting, and where are the drainage instructions?” That is more actionable than asking whether a pot is good. Save the answer with the model number so it does not become detached from the item it describes.
Keep this check ahead of the potting-mix calculation. A volume estimate can tell you approximately how much material fills a simple cavity, but it cannot determine whether that cavity should be filled. If the listing leaves the intended use unclear, choosing an alternative with clear documentation—or continuing with an existing suitable pot—is a reasonable result.
