Begin with the exact model
“Self-watering” describes a category, not a universal operating procedure. Open the instructions for the model and size you are considering. Record the system name, the included parts and any separately purchased items. A bundle may contain different accessories from a standalone container carrying a similar name.

Keep water space and growing space separate
Find the manufacturer’s growing-media requirement and setup sequence. A reservoir, screen and other internal components mean that multiplying outside length, width and height describes the wrong space. Locate the refill point and any overflow outlet before choosing a position. Write down how you will inspect them without relying on a photograph taken from a convenient angle. Also note where the instructions explain the recommended media, initial watering and ongoing checks. Follow the exact product guidance rather than combining procedures from different systems.
Plan for maintenance, not disappearance
Do not turn a reservoir capacity into an invented number of unattended days. Your actual setup and conditions need observation. A seller’s convenience claim does not establish how long your plants can be left without care. This site deliberately provides no holiday-watering guarantee.
Keep the instructions with your garden record and note the date the system was assembled. Record any changes to the configuration so a later troubleshooting conversation starts with the actual setup. If you cannot identify the model or obtain its instructions, resolve that uncertainty before purchase. The best comparison may be to postpone the system, not to select a more expensive bundle.
