Start inside the pot
Put the empty container somewhere you can inspect it without lifting a filled planter. Measure its internal opening and the usable internal depth. Outside dimensions include walls, feet and decorative lips; entering those numbers can make the estimate larger than the actual cavity. Record whether a seller supplied a number or you measured it yourself. Keep those two kinds of evidence separate.
Choose a simple shape only when it resembles the inside. A straight round pot uses one diameter. A tapered round pot needs the top and bottom diameters. A rectangular planter needs its internal length and width. Curved bowls, raised floors and irregular troughs are outside these simple models.
Mark the intended fill line
The calculator asks for full internal depth and the empty space you intend to leave below the rim. That empty space is headspace, not the water reservoir inside a self-watering system. Follow the instructions for the actual planter and plant when choosing a fill level; the default is an arithmetic example, not a planting recommendation.
Write the measurement units beside every number. A notebook entry of “12 by 10” is ambiguous a month later. Our inch and centimeter settings change the interpretation of the entered numbers; re-enter measurements if you switch units.
Take the estimate shopping
Save the calculation with the container count and intended fill line. Next, read the actual bag volume and its unit. If you are repotting, the existing root ball takes up part of the space; only subtract a volume you can reasonably estimate. Leaving that adjustment at zero gives an empty-container estimate.
Before buying, check the inputs once more against the pot. A decimal result is not laboratory precision. Rounded walls, measurement error and how the mix settles can all change the amount used. This tool does not assess crop suitability or the weight a balcony or shelf can support.
